One of the best ways I can come up with to propose is to take her out shopping for a day on my dime, get her a new dress, anything else that makes her feel beautiful and special, then having made reservations for almost every nice restaurant in town take her out to whichever she wants that night and propose there. Is this a terrible idea or am I on to something?

Not bad, but not terribly personal. Maybe you can write a card out that tells her how you feel, and after dinner, leave to go to the restroom, have the waiter give it to her, and then as she finishes reading, walk in with a dessert, which says "will you marry me" (or not) good luck | | Poor Taste?
