I think you have a good point. Although, I am hoping that the mind-set about
grilling is changing. In the past when a
person wanted to grill food, they had to put smelly, messy charcoal in the
grill basin, pour on the fuel, and light the fire. This was an intimidating job. The charcoal bags were dirty, and heavy, and
the whole job was considered laborious, so more men did it. Somehow, they felt empowered, I suppose, for
dominating the fire factor. It stuck,
and even my husband, who cooks nothing, just loves to grill hamburgers and
hot dogs for our friends and family.
Baking is a safe job, handled indoors and the heating element remains at
a safe distance. Baking is equated with
cookies, and cakes, and things that girls make.
Grilling has the “raw meat” aspect, and is a guy thing. When we were at the garden center, recently,
looking for one of those gas grills with the self-starter, the sales “woman”
told us that more women purchase grills now, then men. So who knows, maybe they will step back, and
let us find ourselves, outside and empowered, finally after all these years.
