Hi -
Another place to try is YouTube - they have some great videos demonstrating various techniques.
Also, it depends on what knitting style you use. There are a number of them.
Most people use the English/American method. This is where you hold the yarn in your right hand, and knit stitches from the left needle onto the right needle.
Then there is the Continental method, where you hold the yarn in the left hand. This is supposed to be easier for left-handed knitters. I tried it, and the knit stitch is pretty easy, but purling is really tricky. I plan to work with it more.
Annie Modesitt has a style called Combination knitting. You may like it. because both knitting and purling go into the back of the stitch. But I found the stitches slant a lot on the needle. Again, I think I'll try it some more. You can find instructions on her website.
Then there's what I do. I stick the right needle under my armpit, and hold it there while I do the English knitting style. I thought this was just awkward, taught-myself-when-I-was-12 knitting. But it turns out, according to Annie Modesitt, that it's the Dutch style, and her relatives used to use it! - whoda thought? Of course, it doesn't work at all with circular needles - tho sometimes I kind of prop the right one against my stomach.
Anyway, find the style that's easiest for you, then just practice till you're comfortable with it. There a lots of good beginning knitting books, and free online instructions.
Good luck, and have fun!
