Fashion in the 80’s was a unique mix of styles. The Madonna influence was everywhere for
teens. The heavy mascara, many bracelets all worn on one arm, fish net
stockings, leg warmers, lace tops, short skirts over Capri pants, asymmetrical hair
cuts, tattoos, parachute pants, “jellies” plastic shoes, were all a hit with
the kids. Adults had the “Yuppie”
look: men in sleek suits with t-shirts
and no socks, women with shoulder pads in their blazers and dresses, dark
make-up and lots of bling. Many women
were influenced by the Diana (Princess of Wales) look. She wore elegant dresses for both day and
evening, strapless dresses and bright colors like blue and red, low heeled
pumps, and she wore beautiful jewelry.
Men were wearing Armani suits, and wore their hair slicked back and
clean cut. The movie “Flashdance” made
wearing your dance wear acceptable as street wear. There were off the shoulder sweatshirts and
tights with shorts worn over them,
everywhere. It was a strange fashion
moment in time.
