I got him as a gift a month ago and he is still flighty.....I cannot feed him without him without him flying from perch to perch. I have had many birds in the past and none like this...I have tried laying my hand in the cage for long periods of time and gave him treats from a distance but he still is flighty and I cannot get him to step-up..on my finger. let alone come anywhere near me...HELP!

There is a site that tells you about how parakeets need
interaction with their owner. This is
even truer if you only get one bird.
They are used to co-mingling and won’t be happy if you can’t interact with
them and teach them to trust you. Many
birds are hand raised before you purchase them.
They already know that the hand and finger are safe places to perch. They know the command “up” which means for
them to get on your hand or finger. It
says on the link that if the bird is not trusting, you can still teach it to
interact, but it takes time. There are
step by step instructions, starting with how to let the bird get used to your
hand being in the cage. It also says in
the article, not to let the bird out of the cage until it trusts you and understands
that landing on your finger, is a safe home, outside of the cage. Please read the information they give you for
getting your little parakeet out of the cage, and into a happy pet-parent relationship
with you. These birds are intelligent,
and it won’t be long before you two have bonded. http://www.lisashea.com/petinfo/articles/bird_hand.html
