If you want to create fashion, you begin with an
inspiration. Take a look at the clothing
you see displayed in magazines, preferably things that you like and would want
to wear. Now see what ideas you can come
up with that would improve, in your opinion, the way these clothes look and
fit. For instance, you see a short dress
with cap sleeves and a tiny button front.
Would you add a little collar? Do
you like how the waist fits? Do you
think it would look better with different sleeves, or no sleeves? What color appeals to you? Then imagine yourself in a dress of your own
design. After you begin to draw whatever
fashions that would appeal to you, keep your sketches. Place them in a portfolio, so that you can
keep track of your initial inspiration, and later you will see your
progress. When you are satisfied with
this task, move on to other clothing items that interest you. It is a good idea to take a class in fashion
design. This way, you will learn the
basics of how clothing should fit, to feel good, and what the elements are of
good design work. You will learn about
fabric and color and how different values of color, work together in good
design. If you truly want to be a
designer, you will find this learning process to be fun and exciting.
