In the end of XVII century, a new drink born in India spread in
Europe: it was called punchfrom the word «puntsche» (five). It was an
alcoholic drink composed by a mixture of five heated ingredients: lemon
juice, tea, sugar, nutmeg and arrak (brandy obtained from rice). The
Dutch punch was the most intoxicating: its recipe had been transmitted
by the sailors who had sojourned for a long time in the harbors of
Bengala. The English one was strongless; it was described by Furetière
in his famous and discussed Universal Dictionary: «English drink
obtained with a “chopine” of brandy, a “pint” of lemonade, nutmeg and
some sailor’s biscuits, toasted and trampled. Shake all together until
the liqueurs are mixed». |
