You make a great point about getting organized when you are about to make a move.  We had to move during the worst winter in history in the mid-west.   We had short notice, but it had to be done.  We started by having every family member decide what possessions would be kept, and what items could be donated for someone else to use and enjoy.   When that was done and a community charity organization had happily collected the things that we did not have a use for; we each got boxes and labeled them on all four sides, so that when we reached our destination, we would know where to tell the movers to put the boxes.  We wrapped all of the breakables in bubble wrap and marked the boxes with one word FRAGILE, where it could be easily seen.  We found innovative ways to use towels and sheets as protective wrap for many items, so that we would not create more waste for the land fills. Our movers were careful and caring with our treasures.  They did all that the could to be efficient, and had a plan for placement of large items, and small, so that they would travel well.  We did not lose one treasure during our move.  Planning, and some hard work, as you had said, were the keys to a successful  experience.  Thanks to all the movers out there, who understand that a family puts their valuables in your care, during one of the most difficult times of their life.
