Well, the time is here at our farm and nursery when we get ready for the 2008 growing season. Of course, with the winter ice and flooding we have had here in south central Indiana, it can put a brake on some activities. I am excited because this will be the year we are moving our small local nursery that grows organic berry plants (blueberry, blackberry, and raspberry, mostly) to the internet. I tell you, I feel lucky to be in the role I have, growing lots of berries for our farmers market and CSA program, and being able to totally gorge on them when they are in season. I probably reduce our profit quite a bit, but hey, that is the main reason I got into growing berries, is to eat them. There seems to be a real interest in our country for food security, too. Of cours, putting in some berry plants makes great financial sense. Berries are the most expensive fresh fruit, and they are also the easiest fruit to grow organically. Red Raspberries especially are fine for home gardeners, as they are relatively low maintenance and yield a lot of sweet fruit. I will have more posts covering the points of how to grow your own food, organically, right in your backyard.
