Protein Energy Malnutrition is rampant in many of the
poorest nations on the globe. The fact
that children do not have clean drinking water, decent sanitation, or a proper
diet is being addressed by UNICEF and the United Nations, to name just a few of
those who are dedicated to saving these children. These organizations are
trying to teach young mothers how to grow better food, prepare it and keep their kitchens, clothing, and homes,
cleaner. The mothers are being taught
to grow vegetables that have food value, plant fruit bearing trees and
establish and orchard, as well as how to be clean. The problems are that the women have very
little education, no clean water or sanitary facilities, and relatively few
tools or funds. The World Health Organization is trying to find solutions that
will work. Often, just about the time
that the people get trained and establish good farming skills and better
nutrition, some problem occurs and the people have to migrate to another place
and start all over again. In Africa, Ghana and Nigeria, as well as other
impoverished regions, there is no stable government for any length of time. The progress in fighting PEM is very slow.
