There seem to be many opinions about what the national food
of Trinidad is because of the diverse population of different cultures in the
country. This is a nice way of saying “ask
six people and you’ll get six different answers.” Many people think that Roti is the answer. It is a thin flatbread with ground chickpeas,
and you fill it with chicken, goat, or beef and then pour on the hot
sauce. This is an East Indian dish. However, curried crab and dumplings is also very
popular with the people of Trinidad. In
Port of Spain the locals love shark and bake for breakfast. It is deep fried shark or shrimp and it’s
covered with mangos and tomatoes, and then covered with sauces made with
hot peppers, garlic or oysters. All of
these blends of healthy foods and interesting sauces are just a few of the
great foods you will find in Trinidad.
