I loved the introduction to “The Little Prince”. I love it’s apology to children for
dedicating the book to a grown up. All
the way through the book, the little prince tells us of the foibles and flaws
of grown-ups, but he begins with a dedication to one; and then corrects himself
to dedicate it to the person “WHEN HE WAS A CHILD” that the author knew and
loved. In other words, the author of “The
Little Prince”, Antoine de Saint Exupery, dedicated the book to his best friend
in the world Leon Werth, whom he said “understands everything, even books about
kids”. Antoine goes on to say that all
grown-ups were kids, but don’t remember it; so he corrects the dedication to be
for “Leon Werth, when he was a child”.
The truths and gentle finger poking at adults and their irrational
thinking, are greatly celebrated. I read
this book as a child, and now as a mother, I would have to agree that “The
Little Prince” was correct in most of his assumptions, ok all of them!!
