Where are th homeless going to Go on March 31, 2008 in Springfield, Illinois
|
The Homeless people and a local community group, put up a
tent at the Old Capitol Plaza to demonstrate and draw attention to the needs of
people who for many reasons have no home to go to after a shelter in the
Salvation Army building closes every year on March 31. The group, Homeless United for Shelter, hoped to draw attention to the continuing need
of these people, many of whom were mentally or physically disabled and do not
qualify for other shelters. Many of them
would now be forced to sleep on the street.
The Springfield Overflow Shelter is only open for five months every
year. After that, these people moved to
the steps of the public library and would sleep there until the city made it
clear, recently, that they would no longer tolerate that solution. The spokesperson for the city, told the group
that they are working on some short and long term solutions. Meanwhile the HUS hopes to get church groups
to take these people in and help them.
