Tiny bubbles can be a big problem. To the best of my knowledge,
and from some preliminary research, it does not appear that that a recall was
issued on the paint/clear coat for the red 97 Silverado. With that said, I do
have a close friend who manages 10 body and paint shops. He has informed me
that the tiny bubbles in the clear coat was primarily due to one reason – cost.
As with most products on the market, quality may vary. With paint, however, inherently
you run into a problem of built in obsolescence, thus, the paint cracks, flakes
or bubbles at a period of time after the warranty has expired. Whereas this is a inconvenience to the end
consumer, it saves the auto industry millions.
