My 2003 Passat wagon is approaching 40K miles, i.e. the end of its warranty. I am wondering what other people's experience has been with this car after this "age" (say between 40 and 100 thousand miles) ? Lots of problems? expensive repairs? or fairly painless and smooth going?
Basically the question is: should one keep it for a few more years, or is this the time to get rid of it?

Although I do not directly own a 2003 Passat wagon, I do
feel qualified to respond as both my sister and co-worker have owned similar
year models. I have frequently been a passenger, at times relying on this mode
of transportation to carry me to and from work. From the experiences that I
have been privy to, the Passat has been rock solid and a stellar performer
under 100k. With this in mind, there is
one suggestion I may make. Take a look at aftermarket warranty programs. They
are often very affordable and will extend the bumper to bumper warranty by as
much as 150,000 miles. They base their
costs on the current mileage of the vehicle, and as you are below 50,000 this
may be an affordable option, which would yield peace of mind.
