Ontario Passes Pit Bull Legislation
Ontario has become the first province or state in North America to pass legislation banning pit bulls. While this is the only provincial ban on pit bulls, some communities in Canada already have local bans.
A "CBC Marketplace" survey updated last summer shows a wide variety of Dangerous Dog By-laws across Canada.
The new Ontario law bans pit bulls anywhere in the province of Ontario and sets tougher penalties for the owners of any dog that poses a danger to the public. Current owners of pit bulls can keep their dogs, but the dogs must be leashed and muzzled while in public, and must be spayed or neutered. Owners are also prohibited from breeding or acquiring new pit bulls. It will be up to municipalities to enforce the law, and to identify which dogs are pit bulls. The legislation still needs Royal Assent before it is proclaimed, and will probably come into effect in late summer or early fall.
